Stipends and Fellowships

Students admitted to the Strode MA and PhD Programs receive enhanced GTA stipends.

Strode doctoral fellowships are also available and provide tuition and a stipend of $18,000. Candidates for these fellowships must be applicants for admission to the PhD program in English at the University of Alabama.

Admission to the PhD program and competition for fellowships is competitive. Typically, the Strode faculty admit one or two PhD students per year. An average of five students are admitted to the Strode MA Program each year.

Summer Research Grants and Other Support

The Strode Program sponsors two summer research grants each year, which may support travel to a research library in the U.S. or England or writing time for a student to turn a promising seminar paper into a publishable article. Travel money is available for students in the Program to present papers at scholarly conferences. Faculty here are a valuable resource: we will help you identify your best work and guide you in the process of developing it into conference presentations or publishable papers.
