Major Requirements

For students seeking degrees under the Fall 2016 or later catalogs

The major in English requires 36 hours of EN courses:

  • 9 hours in 200-level classes chosen from literature surveys -- EN 205, EN 206, EN 207, EN 208, EN 209, EN 210, 249 or EN 250 (or honors equivalents) -- or EN 200 or EN 201.
  • 3 hours in a 300- or 400-level theory, writing, or linguistics course
  • 3 hours in a 300-level course covering Early Literature to 1700
  • 3 hours in a 300-level course covering Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Literature
  • 6 hours in 300-level electives
  • 12 hours in 400-level courses

Current University of Alabama students who wish to declare their major as English should do so via myBama.


For students admitted under catalogs in effect prior to Fall 2016

The major in English requires 36 hours of EN courses:

  • 12 hours in 200-level courses: EN 205 and three courses chosen from among EN 206, EN 207, EN 208, EN 209, EN 210, or EN 249 (or honors equivalents)
  • 3 hours in a 300- or 400-level theory, writing, or linguistics course
  • 3 hours in a 300-level course covering Early Literature to 1700
  • 3 hours in a 300-level course covering Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Literature
  • 9 hours in 400-level courses
  • 6 hours in 300-level electives
  • 4 semesters or equivalent proficiency in one foreign language is also required
