Dorothy Allison is a feminist, a working class story teller, a Southern expatriate, a sometime poet, and a happily born-again Californian. She is best known for Trash: Short Stories (Firebrand, 1988), which won two Lambda Literary Awards and the American Library Association Prize for Lesbian and Gay Writing, and her essay collection Skin: Talking About Sex, Class, & Literature (Firebrand, 1994). Her semi-autobiographical novel, Bastard Out of California (Dutton, 1992), was a finalist for the National Book Award.
