Undergraduate Scholarships and Prizes

Information on undergraduate awards is listed below. Please note that all scholarships are for rising juniors and seniors only. Graduating seniors can apply for the Outstanding Research and Scholarly Essay awards. The annual due date for applications is the first Tuesday in December, and application forms are located at the bottom of this page.  To submit your application package, attach your application and essay to an email that includes your name, your crimson email address, and your CWID and email these with the subject line reading “scholarship and award application” to Jessie Robinson at jlrobinson2@ua.edu

Scholarships

The Lee David Black and Florence Weinberg Black Memorial Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses
  • Availability: Department of English

The Frank Cosby Memorial English Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses

The Buford Boone Memorial Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses

The O. B. Emerson Endowed Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses

The William March Memorial Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses

The May S. Strickland Memorial Endowed English Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses

The Emerson Robert Loomis Endowed Scholarship in English Literature

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses

The Norton-Textra Endowed Scholarship for Minority Students in English

The I. Willis Russell Memorial Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses

The Harrison Family Endowed Scholarship

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses

The Watkins Family Endowed Scholarship in English

  • Eligibility: Junior or senior English major with nine or more hours of English courses; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses
  • Availability: Department of English

The Carolyn P. Handa Memorial Scholarship

  • Eligibility: The Handa Scholarship is open to students in all majors, as long as they can demonstrate a special commitment to academic writing; overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher and 3.3 or higher average in English courses
  • Availability: Department of English

The Ruth King Larcom Fine Arts Scholarship in Creative Writing

  • Description: To promote and support the development and enhancement of education and training in the fine arts at the University of Alabama
  • Eligibility: Students must have declared a Minor in Creative Writing. Other requirements determined by the College of Arts & Sciences.
  • Applications will be accepted via Submittable and will be judged by a committee of UGCW faculty. Students should submit a creative writing sample in PDF or Word Document format: no more than 15 pages (double-spaced) prose (fiction or creative nonfiction), OR 4-5 poems (10 pages max). If a mixed-genre application, students should adhere to the 15-page limit.
  • Our judges will be evaluating the submissions blindly, so students should not include their names in the body of their submissions.

The Hudson Strode Shakespeare Prize

Award sponsored by the Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies given for the best essay on Shakespeare by an English major or minor.

The John Blanke Prize

Award sponsored by the Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies given for the best essay by an English major or minor that discusses race and medieval or early modern literature (up to 1800).   For more information on the career of the talented Elizabethan artist, please visit the John Blanke Project.
