February 1, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 2:50 pm

FREE

We will have our next Emerging Scholars meeting this Friday at 2 P.M. in Morgan 301. Jian Gao, a graduate student here in the department will be speaking about “”Re-conceptualizing Historical Inquiry as a Reference to the Present”. There will be a Q&A following the talk. We will also have our customary sandwiches and drinks. Jian describes the talk this way,

“My presentation will largely focus on how learning about history can infuse people with insights not just about the past but also about the present. It considers the ways in which historical inquiry can help policy-makers make informed decisions, thus using history as a tool for looking into the future with much clarity. I will several examples from the history of Chinese immigrants in both the United States and Mexico as examples to show how policy-making in the past influence the demographic make-up of a country and the ways in which they shape people's perceptions of Chinese immigrants in these two countries respectively in the present day. “
