Dr. Imani Perry, Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and author of Looking for Lorraine:The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry and Vexy Thing: On Gender and Liberation, will deliver the fifth Robert Milton Young Memorial Lecture in African American Literary and Cultural Theory on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at 5:30 p.m. in the Gordon Palmer Auditorium (GP 208).

Professor Perry's talk is entitled “Lorraine Hansberry: An Artist of the Past with Purpose for the Present.” 

A Birmingham, AL, native, Professor Perry is an interdisciplinary scholar who studies race and African American culture using the tools provided by various disciplines including: literary and cultural studies, music, law, and the social sciences. She has published widely in the areas of cultural studies and African American studies.

The Robert Milton Young Memorial Lecture in African American Literary and Cultural Theory honors the work and legacy of the late Dr. Robert Milton Young, a University of Alabama Professor of English (1997-2010). With its focus on issues related to constructions of difference, hierarchies of class, and the impact of these constructions and hierachies upon the lived lives of those in disenfranchised or marginalized communities, the lecture is intended both to honor the late Dr. Young and his work as a scholar and a teacher and to celebrate his commitment to realizing the critical communal potential of intellectual work.
